Located on the western shore of Malibu, as part of an idyllic beachfront community, it’s easy to see why the flagship MariSol house has been classed as the best home of 2011, winning a Gold Nugget Grand Award, and also taking top honours for kitchen design and bathroom design.
For workers in the UK and other parts of the world, you’ll obviously have to set aside a lot more time for the commute, and even the extremely wealthy are likely to give the price a second thought – with the showcase MariSol building currently up for sale at an eye-watering $17,000,000.
Designed by architect Barry Berkus, the award-winning house is a masterpiece through and through. Unlike most mansions, there are no signs of any stairs, with the 10,000 square feet of living space all laid out over one floor, with high 14ft ceilings to add to the sense of space.
If you’ve got the money, however, the view from the living room alone almost makes it worthwhile, with an outside courtyard and further comfortable seating overlooking the beautiful green swimming pool, and even prettier blue ocean in front of it.
Everything about the beachfront house screams craftsmanship and attention to detail, from the imported French limestone flooring, to rift-sawn oak ceilings and floors. Even the furniture was designed to perfectly compliment the building, with bathrooms that put 5-star hotels to shame.
Your $17,000,000 also goes a long way when it comes to security and technology, but at that price, we’d hope it would. There are 10 security cameras dotted around the building, with a HD rooftop camera that can spin 360 degrees and zoom in on anything abnormal. When you’re seeking privacy, you’ll be glad to the automated sun blinds, blocking views from the outside, and offering total darkness that can be enjoyed when taking advantage of the integrated theatre room.
Does that all add up to make MariSol’s effort the best house of 2011, however, or have designers got it wrong this time? There’s more to the perfect home than just the design, and could you actually bring yourself to move to Malibu, away from friends and family?
We’d love to hear your thoughts, and whether you’ve seen any other buildings more worthy of the title of the best house of 2011.
